Solid but basic, November 25, 2011

By erikcc "ERIK" (NYC) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Smashwords Book Marketing Guide - How to Market any Book for Free (Smashwords Guides) (Kindle Edition)

The publisher of Smashwords does see the future and it's not with regular publishers but self publishing and epub. The only issue with this is that many epublished books are not edited and proof read. The second issue is that most epublished books are not marketed or advertised in anyway so most ebooks will sell very poorly and very few will do well. And the ones that do well will get picked up by the large publishers so they can put muscle behind it and then make even more money. The advice he gives in the book is excellent but basic but it's a step in the right direction that authors self published or not must do some marketing or they will not do as well as they should. And this goes without saying that marketing should not be "hard" but a soft approach. This book has helped me with marketing my own ebook but again, this is a marathon and not a sprint.

Latin Readings for Review: Elementary Latin Translation Book

More of Latin Readings for Review: Elementary Latin Translation Book,e book devices,e book library,e book prices

This graded reader is a useful book to accompany and supplement any first-year Latin texts currently in use. The Latin is pure, simple, idiomatic, and easily understood by beginning students.

The book's greatest accomplishment is in its masterful presentation of the material. New grammatical forms and constructions are introduced one by one in a carefully graded order. A translation piece never includes a declined form or conjunction which the student has not already learned. As a result, the student is never overwhelmed or frustrated by the material, and he or she is encouraged to continue the learning process.

But the book does more than offer practice in Latin syntax and accidence. Each review features two readings that acquaint the student with the chief events of Roman history and stories from Greek mythology. The edition's value is further enhanced by a listing of Latin references that facilitates the use of the reader as it eliminates the need to consult other grammars.

Also available:

Vergil for Beginners: A Dual Approach to Early Vergil Study - ISBN 0865166285
38 Latin Stories - ISBN 0865162891

For over 30 years Bolchazy-Carducci Publishers has produced the highest quality Latin and ancient Greek books. Improves both Latin and History skills!, June 5, 2001

By "dana-banana" (Chicago, IL) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Latin Readings for Review: Elementary Latin Translation Book (Paperback)

I had the priviledge of having Mr. Hoffman as my first year Latin teacher at St. Ignatius College Prep in Chicago. We used this reader numerous times to strengthen recently aquired Latin skills. A typical lesson in his class consisted of first learning the information through the grammer book, practicing preconstructed sentences in the textbook, and then graduating to the reader for fun stories. The reader allowed us to learn Greek and Roman history while improving Latin skills. The sentence structure used in this reader challenged our minds, and the reader increased our vocabulary. I strongly recommend it to any latin student.

Primarily meant for intermediate students, July 11, 2002

By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Latin Readings for Review: Elementary Latin Translation Book (Paperback)

Now in its eighth edition and enhanced with additions by Donald H. Hoffman, Latin Readings For Review is an ideal elementary Latin translation book which students of the language can use to practice and improve their understanding. Ninety-six brief Latin passages, one per page, form the bulk of this guide; additional sections are devoted to reviewing grammatical tenses and pronunciation. A glossary rounds out this superb study text for serious students of Latin; however, Latin Readings For Review is primarily meant for intermediate students to practice one's skill in Latin, and not a complete textbook in and of itself for novices. Most readings relate to Roman history or Greek mythology in this fine aid to the study of a classic language. Bolchazy-Carducci Publishers are the premier publishers of Latin and Greek language materials. Educators and academic department chairs should write for their free catalog offering a complete listing of all of their instructional texts and...

Very cool, November 24, 2010

By MahJongg Rave "MahJongg Rave" - See all my reviews

This review is from: Barnes & Noble NOOK COLOR eBook Reader (WiFi Only) (Electronics)

The NookColor meets my needs. I didn't want the size or weight of an iPad, and this promises to do everything that an iPad does... only more compactly. In fact, the only thing I'm waiting for in the NookColor is the upcoming upgrade that will handle Flash files. My spouse has the newest Kindle, and is content with it, but I don't like the fact that the Kindle contrast is still low and is not backlit. I love the NookColor backlit screen, and like that I can read in bed without disturbing my spouse. I've adjusted the level of illumination to practically the lowest level, and find reading is very crisp, clear and a pleasure.Although I haven't used my NookColor in bright sun, it's no problem reading in a well-lit room.I also have the Kindle app and the Nook app on my iPod Touch. Again, since it's back-lit, I find it equally clear. I bought the NookColor because I was so happy with the Kindle/Nook apps on my iPod touch, but wanted a bigger screen...

I Swore I'd Never Touch One, but I LOVE IT!!!, December 9, 2010

By cryogini (United States) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Barnes & Noble NOOK COLOR eBook Reader (WiFi Only) (Electronics)

I'm a die-hard book lover, and I swore I'd never read a book electronically, but I started to open to the idea on my last airline flight. I usually travel with a 2-inch stack of printed-out pdf files, 2 or 3 magazines, and a few books not to mention my reading light, highlighters, and sticky notes. It's too much trouble to lug it all around, and now we have to pay for overweight luggage, so having one small tablet loaded with books makes sense.I've been looking at the iPad, but decided that it was too big, too expensive, and too fancy, plus I can't bear the thought of another monthly phone bill. I primarily need to have quick access to reference materials that I have on Word and .pdf files as well as books, and occasional web access. After a lot of research and playing with various devices, I decided that the Nook Color was the best product for me. I have been extremely happy with it -- reading from the Nook Color is a much better experience than I thought it would...
